A pre-MBA program is designed to prepare students to pursue an MBA degree by providing a basic understanding of business concepts and practices that are an essential part of the standard business curriculum for MBA programs in Canada. It enables students to improve their performance on the GMAT and, for international students, may involve language preparation. Programs vary from a few weeks to a full year, depending on the school and the curriculum focus.
Thompson Rivers University's (TRU) Pre-MBA is one example. The TRU pre-MBA prepares domestic and international students to apply for admission to the 10-month TRU MBA. The program consists of the successful completion of an English proficiency test and successful completion of 12 qualifying courses.
An optional GMAT preparation course is also provided. In addition, the program focuses on specific academic and business-related areas, such as research, improving business report writing, case study analysis, leadership and presentation skills.
York University's English Language Institute's (YUELI) pre-MBA is another example. YUELI's pre-MBA is a full-time, eight-week program designed to prepare graduate level students (those with high intermediate to advanced English) for MBA study at North American universities. The program includes
intensive language study as it relates to Business English usage
content-related modules, to introduce language used in a business environment
business-related projects: all students are required to complete a major case study team project that involves considerable research, analysis of economic and financial data, a written report - including a recommendation - and a related oral presentation given to professors from York's Schulich School of Business
extra-curricular activities, such as guest speakers from Canadian businesses.
